You open Trust Wallet and your balance is gone. It is a sickening moment, and the first question is always how. In almost every case, the funds left because your secret recovery phrase was exposed or because you approved a malicious transaction. This guide explains what happened and the steps to take now.
How the funds left
| Phrase exposure | Your 12 words were typed into a fake site, a fake support chat or saved where they were stolen |
|---|---|
| Malicious approval | You connected to a site and signed a request that let it move your tokens |
| Fake app | You installed a lookalike wallet from a link instead of an official store |
First steps now
- Treat this wallet as compromised and stop adding funds to it.
- Create a new wallet with a fresh phrase, written only on paper.
- Move anything left in other wallets you control to safety.
- Open the transaction in a block explorer and copy the receiving address and hash.
- Report the theft to the police and a fraud centre such as the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) or Action Fraud.
How your phrase might have leaked
- ✗ A fake wallet website asking you to import or restore
- ✗ Fake support on Telegram or Discord asking for your words
- ✗ A screenshot of your phrase saved to a hacked cloud account
- ✗ A fake airdrop form asking for your phrase to claim
- ✗ Malware that reads your clipboard or files
The rule that never changes
No real wallet, exchange or support team will ever ask for your secret recovery phrase. Trust Wallet support will not, and nobody honest will. If you are asked, you are being robbed.
Check for a fake app
If you installed Trust Wallet from a link or an advert rather than the official app store, it may be a fake built to steal phrases. Remove it, and from your new device, only install from the official store. Even then, check the developer name carefully.
Can the funds be recovered?
The thief’s wallet is public and can be traced. If the funds reach an exchange, that exchange can sometimes freeze the account after a police request. Nobody can reverse the transfer, and nobody can recover it for an upfront fee. Treat any such offer as a second scam.
Protect the new wallet
- ✗ Write the new phrase on paper, never in a photo or note app
- ✗ Use a hardware wallet for larger balances
- ✗ Keep a separate wallet for trying new sites
- ✗ Never approve a signature you do not understand
Can I recover the same wallet?
No. Once the phrase is exposed, that wallet is unsafe forever. You move to a new one.
Is Trust Wallet itself at fault?
Usually not. The loss comes from an exposed phrase or a signed approval, not the app.
A note for new users
If you are new to crypto, it helps to remember that your secret phrase is the whole wallet. Anyone with it owns everything inside, from anywhere. That is why every safe habit comes back to one thing: keep the phrase offline, on paper, and never type it into a screen. Do that, and most of these attacks cannot touch you.
The short version
- An exposed phrase means the wallet is lost for good.
- Move to a new wallet, on paper only.
- Nobody legitimate asks for your phrase.
- Funds can be traced, not reversed.
