If you bought crypto with your bank card or a bank transfer and then sent it to a scam platform, you are probably asking one question: can my bank reverse a crypto scam payment? The honest answer is sometimes. It depends on how you paid, where the money went and how quickly you act.
Chargebacks explained simply
A chargeback is a request through your card provider to reverse a payment. It works best when you paid a merchant that did not deliver what was promised. Many card schemes allow around 120 days from the transaction, though this varies. Call as early as possible and ask your bank which reason code they will use, such as fraud or services not provided.
Bank transfers and fraud reimbursement
In some countries, banks must consider reimbursing customers who were tricked into sending money to a fraudster. In the UK, for example, rules for authorised push payment fraud have changed in recent years. Ask your bank directly whether your payment is covered and how to claim. If they refuse, ask for the decision in writing.

What to say when you call
- Say you are reporting an investment scam.
- Give each payment date and amount.
- Explain what you were promised and what happened.
- Ask what options exist: chargeback, recall or fraud claim.
- Ask for a claim reference and the name of the person you spoke to.
Evidence banks look for
- ✗ The website and company name you paid
- ✗ Screenshots of promises of returns
- ✗ Proof you tried to withdraw and were refused
- ✗ Any fee demands
- ✗ A police or fraud centre reference
You can strengthen your claim with a regulator warning from the FCA Warning List or IOSCO I-SCAN, and a report reference from the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), Action Fraud or Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
If the bank says no
Do not give up after one call. Ask for a written final response. In many countries you can then escalate to a financial ombudsman or complaints body at no cost. Keep copies of everything you send and receive.
A word of warning
Some fake recovery companies claim they can force your bank to refund you for a fee. You do not need a paid middleman to talk to your own bank. Anyone guaranteeing a refund is not being honest with you.
Timing matters more than perfection
Many people delay calling the bank because they want to gather every document first. Do not wait. Make the first call today with the payments you know about, then add the rest later. A claim opened early with partial information is much stronger than a perfect one opened after the deadline has passed.
Will my bank blame me?
Banks look at whether you were deceived. Being honest and clear helps your case.
Can I claim if I paid an exchange?
Sometimes, especially if the bank failed to spot unusual activity. Ask them.
Real situations, real answers
Tom paid a trading website directly with his credit card. His bank raised a chargeback for services not provided and asked for screenshots of his blocked withdrawals. Priya used a debit card to buy crypto on a real exchange, then sent it to a scam wallet. Her bank said the exchange had delivered the crypto, so a chargeback was unlikely, but it logged a fraud report and reviewed whether warning signs were missed. Two similar losses, two very different paths, which is why the payment method matters so much.
How you paid changes everything
| Credit card to the scam site directly | Strongest chargeback position |
|---|---|
| Debit card to the scam site | Chargeback often possible, rules vary |
| Card or transfer to a real exchange, then crypto sent on | Harder, because the exchange delivered what you paid for |
| Bank wire or faster payment to the scammer | Ask for a recall and a fraud claim |
| Crypto sent from your own wallet | The bank cannot reverse a blockchain transfer |
