Seed Phrase Stolen? Move Your Crypto Now

Your seed phrase, also called a recovery phrase, is the master key to your wallet. Anyone who has it can take everything, from anywhere, at any time. If you typed it into a website, read it to a support agent or saved it somewhere that was hacked, treat it as stolen. Here is what to do, in order, starting now.

How seed phrases get stolen

Fake wallet websites Look alike pages that ask you to restore your wallet
Fake support Agents on Telegram or Discord asking for your phrase to fix an issue
Malware Programs that read your clipboard or files
Cloud backups Photos or notes synced to an account that was hacked
Fake airdrops Forms asking for your phrase to claim tokens

Step 1: Create a brand new wallet

Do not reuse the old wallet or import the old phrase anywhere. Create a completely new wallet with a fresh seed phrase. Write the new phrase on paper, never in a screenshot, a note app, an email or a cloud file. If you can, use a hardware wallet.

✎ REPORT A SCAM NOW

Report it to Cyanosoft with your wallet address.

Step 2: Move what is left, fast

Send every coin and token you can from the old wallet to the new one. Start with the largest balances. If the thief is watching, they may be waiting for you to add gas fees, so move quickly and do not top up the old wallet with more funds than you need for one transfer.

Step 3: Check approvals and connections

On Ethereum and similar networks, wallets can give apps permission to spend tokens. Use the token approval checker on Etherscan, or the equivalent explorer for your network, to see which permissions remain on the old address. Revoking them helps, but the safest move is still to empty the old wallet entirely.

Step 4: Record what was taken

Record Why
Old wallet address Starting point for tracing
Outgoing hashes and times Shows exactly what left
Receiving addresses Where the thief holds funds
How it leaked Helps link your case to others

Step 5: Report it

Report the theft to the police and to a fraud centre: the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), Action Fraud, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or Scamwatch. If funds moved to an exchange, contact that exchange with the transaction details and your police reference.

The rule that never changes

No real wallet, exchange, support team or government agency will ever ask for your seed phrase. Not to verify, not to fix, not to sync, not to claim. Anyone who asks is trying to steal from you.

Clean your device

If you are not sure how the phrase leaked, assume your device may be compromised. Run a reputable security scan, update your system and remove unknown browser extensions. Create the new wallet on a device you trust.

Can I change my seed phrase?

No. You create a new wallet and move your funds to it.

Can stolen crypto be returned?

Sometimes, if it is traced to an exchange that can freeze it. Report quickly.

A common story

Lena searched for help after her wallet app showed an error. A support account on X replied within minutes and sent her a link to a sync tool. The page looked exactly like her wallet and asked for her twelve words to repair the connection. Within an hour her tokens were gone. The error was unrelated, the support account was fake and the sync tool was a phishing page. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone, and the steps above are what she should have done next.
