You connected your wallet to claim a free airdrop or mint an NFT, signed what looked like a normal request, and minutes later your tokens were gone. This is a wallet drainer. It does not need your seed phrase. It tricks you into giving permission. Here is how drainers work and what to do now.
How a drainer works
- You land on a site promoted through social media, Discord, a fake ad or a hacked account.
- The site asks you to connect your wallet to claim, mint or verify.
- You are asked to sign a transaction or a message.
- That signature gives the site permission to move your tokens or NFTs.
- The drainer sweeps everything it can, often within seconds.

The signatures to fear
| Approve or setApprovalForAll | Lets a contract move your tokens or NFTs |
|---|---|
| Permit signatures | Off chain approvals that can be used later |
| Unexpected transfers | A claim that is really a send |
| Blind signing | A message you cannot read clearly |
wallet drainer scam: What to do now
- Disconnect the site from your wallet.
- Check approvals with the token approval checker on your network explorer, such as Etherscan, and revoke anything you do not recognise.
- Move remaining assets to a brand new wallet.
- Save the site address, the transaction hashes and screenshots.
- Report to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), Action Fraud or your local police.
Revoking an approval costs a small network fee, and some drainers try to front run you. That is why moving the remaining assets to a fresh wallet is the safest step.
Warning signs before you connect
- ✗ An airdrop you never signed up for
- ✗ Urgency: claim in the next hour
- ✗ A link from a reply, a DM or a hacked project account
- ✗ A site address that is slightly different from the official one
- ✗ Your wallet shows a warning about the site
Protect yourself next time
Keep a small hot wallet for experiments and a separate wallet for savings. Read every signature request. If you do not understand it, do not sign it. Use wallet features that simulate transactions and show what will leave your wallet before you confirm.
Can drained assets be traced?
Yes. Drainer gangs move funds through many addresses, but everything is public. Reports from many victims help investigators link wallets to the same operation, and funds that reach exchanges can sometimes be frozen.
Why airdrop scams spread so fast
Drainer gangs often hack a real project’s social media account and post a fake claim link. Followers trust the account, click quickly and sign before they think. If a well known project suddenly announces a surprise claim with a short deadline, check its official website and other channels before you connect anything.
Did they need my seed phrase?
No. Drainers use the permissions you signed.
Is my new wallet safe?
Yes, as long as you do not connect it to the same site or sign unknown approvals.
Keep a record for investigators
Write down the exact site address, where you found it, the time you connected and every transaction that followed. Export your wallet history if your wallet allows it. Drainer kits are rented to many criminals, so one clear report can help link your loss to dozens of others and to the wallets where the money gathered.
wallet drainer scam: Remember this
- Drainers use signatures, not your seed phrase.
- Revoke approvals and move to a new wallet.
- Do not sign what you cannot read.
- Keep savings in a separate wallet.
