How Stolen Crypto Is Traced on the Blockchain

People often think crypto is anonymous. It is not. Every transfer is written onto a public ledger that anyone can read. That is why stolen crypto can often be traced on the blockchain, even when the people behind the scam are hiding. Here is how tracing works, in plain language.

The public ledger

A blockchain is like a giant shared notebook. Each line says that a certain amount moved from one address to another at a certain time. Names are not written there, only addresses. But addresses can be linked to people and businesses when they touch an exchange, a payment service or another known service.

What you need to start

  • ✗ The transaction hash (TXID) for each payment
  • ✗ Your sending address
  • ✗ The receiving address
  • ✗ The coin and network used, such as USDT on TRON or ETH on Ethereum
  • ✗ The date and time

You can find the hash in your exchange history or wallet app. Paste it into a block explorer such as Etherscan, Tronscan or a Bitcoin explorer to see the transfer yourself.

How tracers follow the money

  1. Start at the receiving address and follow each outgoing transfer.
  2. Group addresses that act together, called clustering.
  3. Spot addresses that belong to exchanges or known services.
  4. Flag patterns such as many small splits, quick hops or swaps between coins.
  5. Produce a report showing the path and where funds rest.

Where the trail can lead

Destination What it means
A centralised exchange The exchange can be asked to freeze the receiving account through legal channels
A wallet still holding funds The address can be watched and flagged
A mixer Harder to follow, but patterns can sometimes be matched
A cross chain bridge The trail continues on another network

What tracing can and cannot do

Tracing can show where funds went and whether they reached a business that can act. It cannot reverse a transaction or force anyone to give money back on its own. A freeze usually needs a police report, a legal request or a court order, and exchanges decide based on their own rules and local law.

Why speed matters

Scammers move funds quickly. The sooner a trace is done and an exchange is notified, the better the chance that funds are still in an account that can be frozen. Report to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), Action Fraud or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and keep the reference number ready.

Beware of fake tracers

Some people sell fake tracing reports or claim they can hack scam wallets. Real tracing uses public data and analysis tools. Nobody can hack a blockchain. Never pay anyone who contacted you first, and never share your seed phrase.

Try it yourself in five minutes

Open your exchange history and copy the transaction hash of one payment. Paste it into the right block explorer for that coin. You will see the amount, the time and the receiving address. Click the receiving address to see what happened next. You may find the funds were split, moved on within minutes, or are still sitting there. Screenshot what you see and add it to your evidence folder.

Is crypto tracing legal?

Yes. It uses public blockchain data.

How long does a trace take?

A simple trace can take hours. Complex cases with many hops take longer.

Common coins and networks used in scams

USDT on TRON Very common because transfers are cheap and fast
USDT or ETH on Ethereum Common, with many exchange links
Bitcoin Used in older and larger cases
BNB Chain tokens Often seen in fake token and P2P scams

Knowing the network is important. A hash pasted into the wrong explorer will show nothing, so check the network name in your withdrawal history first.
